Question ~ How do I contact Dolly Venables for a reading or speaking event?
Answer ~ Please provide details on our CONTACT FORM and we will be in touch shortly!
Q ~ What made you decide to become an author?
A ~ Since I was a young girl, I’ve been passionate about writing. When I create a story, my imagination comes to life. I can build a world that may or may not exist, and my hope is that my stories help others cope with the challenges they face in life.
When I wrote This Thing Called Kindergarten, it wasn’t what inspired me to write the book, but who. I had the privilege of working with an incredible kindergarten teacher, Diane Swisher. She made kindergarten both enjoyable and memorable, making every student feel like the most important child in the class. I admired her teaching style—the fun, the calmness, and the confidence she instilled in her students. I didn’t want Diane’s contribution to education or her legacy to be forgotten. I wanted to create a book, a character, that would resonate with young children and show them what a wonderful time kindergarten can be, thanks to exceptional teachers like Mrs. Swisher.
Q ~ How did you find your illustrator?
A ~ I was introduced to Stephen Riggins by my daughter, who worked with him in Denver, CO. He is truly a godsend!
Now living in Iowa, Steve manages his family’s small farm and also teaches digital illustration. He’s an exceptional illustrator and an absolute joy to collaborate with. It’s always exciting to see the illustrations he creates to bring my words to life.
Q ~ Where do you get the storyline idea for my books?
A ~ I ask myself. “Can I, through writing a book, send a meaningful message to my readers? Can I help make the world a slightly better place?” In This Thing Called Kindergarten (2023), for example, my goal was to reassure children who felt nervous about starting kindergarten that change can be a positive experience—if they’re willing to take chances and embrace new opportunities. I wanted to give them the confidence to know that when we lean on those around us—our friends, family, loved ones, and teachers for support and encouragement—everything will turn out just fine.
In Pester Lester the Mischievous Moose (coming fall 2024), I hope to encourage others to treat people the way they’d like to be treated. My simple message is: "Just be nice!" It’s also written in honor of my father Lester which you will see in the dedication.
